How it’s different from Stereo Mastering: By having 8 stereo stems of your song we have more control in applying processing to specific areas of the mix. In the standard Mastering process we are working with a stereo file, and everything we do is applied to the whole mix. Say the bass was a bit overbearing, we may apply low frequency compression to the whole song to tighten it. This will also tighten the bass frequencies of each instrument in the song as it is a stereo file. With Stem Mastering we are able to just apply this compression to the bass, which will result in a more accurate result.
